New Fast Track Registration Pathway for International Medical Specialists: What you need to know

In an exciting announcement, the Medical Board of Australia is creating a brand new specialist registration pathway to safely fast-track urgently needed specialist doctors into the Australian health system.

What this means for you:

• This new pathway is an additional route to specialist registration for eligible specialist doctors, alongside the existing specialist medical college assessment system.
• The Board will recognise specific overseas qualifications and grant upfront specialist registration to eligible doctors.
• Successful applicants will work under specialist supervision for six months while completing Australian healthcare system orientation programs and upon satisfactory completion, will be granted full specialist registration.

The initial focus is on these high-demand specialties:

• General Practice
• Anaesthesia
• Obstetrics & Gynaecology
• Psychiatry
  

Timeline:

• The fast-track pathway for General Practice is expected to launch in October 2024.
• Pathways for Anaesthesia, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Psychiatry are expected to follow in December 2024.

This expedited pathway will streamline the registration process for qualified IMGs, helping to address critical doctor shortages in Australia’s healthcare system.
