The Medical Board of Australia (the Board) is currently consulting on a revised specialist registration standard that aims to streamline the process and safely fast-track urgently needed specialist doctors into the Australian health system and would like your input.

Requests for feedback are open to 3rd July 2024.

How can you get involved?

Dr. Susan O’Dwyer, the Board’s SIMG Task Force lead, encourages everyone involved in recruiting and employing SIMGs to participate in the consultation process. The consultation on the draft revised standard is open until July 3rd, 2024.

Visit the AHPRA website for more information on the consultation and to provide your feedback.

Key points to remember:

  • The new expedited specialist pathway will be an additional pathway to specialist registration
  • The pathway will be available to international specialists deemed to hold a qualification which is substantially equivalent or based on similar competencies to an approved specialist qualification for the specialty
  • A list of qualifications considered substantially equivalent will be published in consultation with the Australian Medical Council and specialist medical colleges
  • The pathway will not require a college assessment
  • The Board is seeking feedback on a draft revised standard for specialist registration. This consultation closes on July 3rd, 2024, so make sure your voice is heard!
  • Priority specialties include GPs, anaesthetists, obstetricians/gynaecologists, and psychiatrists. The fast-track pathway is expected to launch for GPs in October 2024, with other specialties following in December 2024.
